Don Bosco was a great ‘dreamer’ and launched a vast movement in the Church for the education and salvation of the young. For this purpose he founded:
– the Society of St Francis de Sales (1859, Turin) or Salesians of Don Bosco;
– the Association Mary Help of Christians (1869, Turin);
– the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (Mornese 1872, co-founder St Mary Domenica Mazzarello);
– the Salesian Cooperators Association (1876, Turin).
Over the years other congregations and associations have been added which today form the Salesian Family, a grouping of religious institutions and ecclesial movements inspired by the Salesian charism of St John Bosco. This charismatic and spiritual community currently includes 32 officially recognised groups with over 400,000 members scattered all over the world, while a further 27 groups aspire to become part of it.
